Researchers from the University of California work on a system which allows for 3D mapping of objects inside of buildings. By using simply drones and Wi-Fi, the system allows to literally see through walls.
The system consists of two drones, Wi-Fi antenna and an interpolation. The drones work together – one spreads the Wi-Fi on one side of the structure, and the second picks it up on the other side. Drones flies together and record differences in the wave streams at different points. Later on, that information allows for creation of a 3D model of a closed building. The method does not allow for full accuracy, but has a great potential for indoor mapping e.g. in emergency situations or on archeological sites.
