Catch them if you can – fighting drones in Japan

15/03/16

All around the world law enforcement forces are trying to prepare for the growing amount of commercial drones flying around the cities restricted airspace. Various options are being tested from hacking into the drones systems or real eagle fighters.

The Japanese police decided to follow the saying ‘If you can’t beat them join them’ and came up with a drone that will catch other drones into nets. Furthermore, it plans to have its first special units that will patrol the sky of Tokyo. The squad will be part of Metropolitan Police Department's riot squad and patrol important government buildings. In case a suspicious drone will be detected, the officer will warn the operator to ground their craft and if they refuse to comply, the officer will call for the drone unit. These elite drones will capture the rogue flying device with a net and bring it in for questioning. The idea for the unit developed after April 2015 when a drone carrying radioactive material landed on the roof of Japanese Prime Minister’s office.
