PwC hires Legal Tech Partner to lead EMEA Contract Lifecycle Management Center of Excellence

From 1 January, Maciej Stefaniak has become a Partner at PwC Legal Business Solutions based in Poland. He will be responsible for the firm’s new CLM Centre of Excellence (Contract Lifecycle Management) that will provide CLM and related legal technology and GenAI services to clients throughout the EMEA region. These new technology services reinforce PwC Legal Business Solutions’ existing competencies and respond to growing client expectations related to digital transformation. They will expand the scope of services of the New Law practice, which will be strengthened by teams of professionals in the coming months.

Maciej Stefaniak is one of the most recognisable legal technology professionals in services related to Contract Lifecycle Management in the Europe, Africa and Middle East region. He has been working with many of the largest organisations in the world for 16 years, providing advisory services regarding digital transformations and CLM. In the coming months, the PwC NewLaw practice will be reinforced with specialists in the design and implementation of CLM strategies, new legal services such as contract standardisation and clause harmonisation, implementation of technology solutions, including the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), transformation, change management, contract analytics and post-implementation services.

In 2024 alone, the global market for Contract Lifecycle Management services will continue to grow by over 40%, according to Gartner data.

“The New Law practice in the global PwC Legal Business Solutions network will be further strengthened with Maciej Stefaniak joining us. Technologies and tools using artificial intelligence are redefining the roles of in-house lawyers, in transactions, risk management as well as internal transformations. Maciej will add his extensive experience, energy and understanding of our clients' needs in the EMEA region. He will also expand career development opportunities in Poland for specialists across our region, to participate in international CLM projects"

- says Cezary Żelaźnicki, PwC Legal Managing Partner, PwC EMEA Legal Business Solutions Leader.

Despite the economic slowdown, companies highly prioritise activities related to digital transformation. This process accelerates and also affects the functioning of legal divisions and departments. To keep an important place at the board table, they must first become a real partner for the business, provide management information based on data and their analysis and help generate more value in a shorter time.

“Contracts regulate the entire business of companies (from sales to purchases), and firms are unable to manage them effectively, e.g. fulfil obligations to their customers and partners or adapt to changing legal regulations at a pace adequate to market situations. In many cases, companies do not have one single repository, and searching for information or updating documents is impossible or too time-consuming. Organisations see that the lack of effective contract management skills reduces their competitiveness in the market. We know how to help them and how to use technology tools effectively"

- adds Maciej Stefaniak, PwC Partner, CLM Centre of Excellence Leader at PwC Legal.

CLM-related initiatives appear high on the IT investment and business transformation agenda.

“We are at a unique moment in time. Legal departments started their transformation journeys quite late compared to other corporate departments and they are still among the least digitalised. We see an exponential growth of new technologies that can radically change how legal departments function. I see a huge opportunity and challenge for companies that want to prepare them to operate in the new reality"

- adds Cezary Żelaźnicki.

In the near future, the entire organisation will count on the CLM system as the only reliable source of knowledge about contracts, and it will be the main working tool of the legal department. This is part of the processes of system centralisation in other departments in the company: enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), human capital management (HCM) and eProcurement. All process steps related to creating, negotiating, signing and managing the contract will take place in the CLM system. Central contract management will help reduce operational costs, better manage risks and create greater but also long-term value.
