How to reduce deforestation risk and build deforestation-free supply chains?

Are you familiar with the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)? Do you know whether and how this regulation applies to your business?

The EU regulation on deforestation-free supply chains (effective since June 2023) requires companies to meet strict EUDR due diligence obligations to combat global deforestation. It ensures that specified commodities and their derived products placed on–or exported from–EU market are deforestation-free and legally produced. A key requirement is verifying that production areas your products derive from have not been deforested after 31 December 2020, across the entire supply chain.

Understanding your company’s EUDR exposure – whether you are an operator or trader – is essential to continue trading deforestation-risk commodities such as coffee, cocoa, cattle, palm oil, soy, rubber, and wood, as well as over 800 EUDR-listed derived product categories within the EU.

EUDR Application Deadlines:

  • For large & medium operators: 30 December 2026
  • For micro & small operators: 30 June 2027

Assessing Supply Chain Risks for EUDR Compliance

This requires a deep analysis of your supply chain risks for relevant commodities and product groups. Key questions include:

  • Can you trace your procured commodities to their origin?
  • Is production compliant with country-of-origin legislation?
  • Can you prove your products have not contributed to deforestation or forest degradation?
  • What steps are needed to meet EUDR requirements?
