Drones may soon fly on 4G networks

21/09/16

One of the greatest challenges to commercial drones today is the limited distance that they can fly away from their operator. Legislators in the United States have acknowledged this and limited commercial drone flight to line of sight. AT&T and Qualcomm argues that the solution is one that is already familiar to us. We simply connect drones to existing 4G and future 5G networks. It seems like a practical, reliable and profitable solution; however, unlike phones and in-car entertainment systems, there are a number of technical obstacles that have to be overcome before drones can reliably fly on these networks. Drones need a consistent connection without disruption, and it will need to be able to avoid dead-zones or zones of weak connectivity.
