The companies Eversourse has begun using drones in their regular inspections of powerlines in the United States. This is the process that traditionally reserved for the helicopter. Helicopter are, however, expensive, and due to their disruptive nature with regard to inhabitants of areas they fly over, they must keep their distance when checking powerlines.
Drones are much less disruptive and therefore can fly much closer to the powerlines, capturing more detailed imagery, not to mention that they are a fraction of the operating cost. Eversource has already carried out its first inspection, and currently plans to use a small number of drones in addition to their helicopter operations, but are hoping to expand if successful. Sterlite Energy in India has had the same idea, and partnered with the drone startup Sharper Shape.
