Co zrobić z emisjami, których nie da się uniknąć?

Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: Każda firma jest trochę różna i ma swoje własne emisje, ale my chcemy dzisiaj powiedzieć o emisjach każdej, absolutnie każdej firmy na świecie i w Polsce, jakie każda firma ma emisje.
Jan Biernacki: Mamy kilka grup emisji, które dotyczą: działalności podstawowej, logistyki (czyli floty i wyjazdów służbowych), odpadów i zużycia mediów. Możemy sobie śmiało powiedzieć, że z niektórymi z tych emisji nie da się nic zrobić i zejście z nimi do zera jest po prostu niemożliwe.
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: Co można zrobić z emisjami jeżeli chodzi o energię elektryczną? Na pewno można je zmniejszyć poprzez energetykę odnawialną. I o tym też za chwilę.
Jan Biernacki: Skupmy się na tym, co zrobić gdy już wyczyścimy wszystkie emisje i nie możemy zejść niżej a nadal widzimy, że emitujemy CO2. Tutaj jednymi z rozwiązań, które przychodzą nam z pomocą to tak zwane offsety CO2, carbon offsets. Dla mnie najważniejszy temat odnośnie offsetów, to jest jakość projektów offsetowych.
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: Czyli nie możemy już zejść z tych emisji, więc co można zrobić? Można kupić tzw. certyfikaty offsetowe, czyli ktoś robi projekt, który redukuje emisje, a my jednostki tych właśnie zaoszczędzonych emisji możemy jako firma kupić. I teraz dyskusja na świecie i w Polsce ma miejsce czy offsety są dobre czy nie, bo w myśl standardów międzynarodowych zdania są podzielone. Część standardów mówi, że firmy absolutnie nie powinny korzystać z offsetów, a część standardów dopuszcza je. I mamy dyskusję, każda firma staje przed wyborem, czy kupować certyfikaty offsetowe, czy to jest dobre, czy złe. No i my mamy również własne zdanie.
Jan Biernacki: Koncept wydaje się świetny i ciekawy. No bo nie możemy już zejść z emisjami, to zejdźmy z emisjami gdzie indziej. Ja mam spory problem ze specyfiką i jakością projektów, które są oferowane w ramach offsetów CO2, bo dochodzi do sytuacji że przy ograniczonej możliwości weryfikacji faktycznej realizacji przebiegu tych projektów i ich konsekwencji…
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: … mimo tego, że są certyfikowane.
Jan Biernacki: Dokładnie. Kupujemy certyfikaty offsetowe dla projektów, które znajdują się głównie w krajach rozwijających się i nie pozostawiamy redukcji emisji CO2 i naszych celów w ramach kraju i w ramach terytoriów, w których chcemy zredukować te emisje.
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: Powiem, o czym marzę i wierzę że to będzie rynek w Polsce 2030, 2050. Marzę o tym, żebyśmy mieli świetne projekty offsetowe w Polsce, które robią naszą planetę lepszą, czyli rzeczywiście pomagają redukować emisje. Żeby były bardzo dobrze walidowane na poziomie certyfikacji, żeby firmy miały pewność, że to są dobre projekty, które rzeczywiście - przez to że firmy kontrybuują finansowo do zakupu certyfikatu - pomagają chronić naszą ziemię i chronić klimat. I o tym marzę, więc do wszystkich przedsiębiorców, do wszystkich firm, do wszystkich fundacji, i do wszystkich organizacji: rozpocznijmy tę dyskusję jak stworzyć dobry rynek offsetowy w Polsce.
What to do with the emissions that cannot be avoided?
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: Every company is different and has its own emissions, but today we want to talk about the emissions of absolutely every company in the world and in Poland, about emissions applying to every business.
Jan Biernacki: We have several groups of emissions related to core business operations, logistics (or fleet and business travel), waste, and utility consumption. We can say confidently that nothing can be done about some of these emissions, and it’s simply impossible to reduce them to zero.
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: What can be done about emissions when it comes to electricity? We can definitely reduce them by using renewable energy. We’ll discuss this in a moment too.
Jan Biernacki: Let’s focus on what we should do when we’ve reduced all emissions as much as we can, but we can see we are still emitting CO2. One helpful solution involves what are known as CO2 offsets or carbon offsets. For me, the most important topic related to offsets is the quality of offset projects.
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: If we can’t reduce emissions any more, what should we do? We can buy offset certificates. This means someone is doing an emissions reduction project, and our company can simply buy the units of these saved emissions. Discussions are underway in the world and in Poland on whether offsets are good or bad, because international standards are divided on this issue. Some standards say that companies should not make use of such offsets, but others permit them. So there are discussions, and each company must choose if it should buy offset certificates, if this is good or bad. We have our own opinion, too.
Jan Biernacki: This seems to be a great and interesting idea. We can’t reduce emissions here, so let’s reduce them somewhere else. But I have a big problem with the nature and quality of carbon offset projects, because there are limited possibilities of verifying the actual implementation of these projects and their consequences…
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: …despite the fact that they are certified.
Jan Biernacki: That’s right. We buy offset certificates for projects chiefly in developing countries, and we don’t keep CO2 emission reductions and our targets at home, in the territories where we want to reduce these emissions.
Dorota Dębińska-Pokorska: I’ll tell you what my dream is. I believe this is what will the market in Poland will be like in 2030 or 2050. My dream is to have great offset projects in Poland, ones that will make our planet a better place, or really help to reduce emissions. They should be very well validated at the level of certification so that companies can be sure that these projects are good, that the companies that contribute financially to the purchase of certificates are helping protect the Earth and climate. This is my dream, so I’m saying this to all entrepreneurs, all businesses, all foundations, and all organizations: let’s start a discussion on how to create a good offset market in Poland.
